Originally, the L-50 shipped with a proprietary operating system including advanced security features, but both the device and the operating system it was running are now out of support, so we repurposed the device as a general-purpose router and firewall by installing OpenWrt, an open-source firmware for networking equipment. We were so impressed with how well OpenWrt works on this hardware that we couldn’t bear to part with the first L-50W we repurposed. We still have it in our office, use it every day, and have no plans to retire it. The device is implemented in a desktop form factor. The case is all-metal. The unit is passively cooled and completely quiet. The device runs on a Marvell Feroceon 88FR131 processor (1.2 GHz) with 512 MB of RAM and 512 MB of Flash storage. The device contains a Marvell 88F6281 network interface card with ten Gigabit Ethernet ports During installation, OpenWrt correctly identified the WAN port and automatically configured the nine remaining ports (including the port labeled DMZ) to be on the same LAN. (Needless to say, all these settings are changeable.) The buyer will receive detailed configuration notes so the device can be put to work right out of the box. The device can be managed via a Web interface or on the command line via SSH. In our estimation, this device is a good choice for a home, a home lab, or a small business.
