SABIN 8019.Memoirs of the American Revolutionary War and subsequent travels through the United States by the Marquis de Chastellux (1734-1788), the French military officer who served as Major General in the French expeditionary forces, acting as principal liaison between General Comte de Rochambeau and George Washington, of whom the author glowingly writes here. Unusually, the second volume is bound with the uncommon rebuttal to Chastellux's memoirs by the fiery French abolitionist Jacques Pierre Brissot de Warville (1754-1793), who here "attacks the Marquis for having...exposed to ridicule, and grossly misrepresented the principles and manners of the Quakers." Brissot also criticizes Chastellux's portrayal of Black Americans and "the condition of mankind" in general." The work, in contrast with Chastellux's, is "replete with liberal sentiments on religious and political subjects" (Sabin).
