Description: CHARLIE PARKERYoung Bird: 1940-1944 Volumes 1 & 2 French import Two (2) Compact Discs (2 CD) set. Stereo. CASE & INSERTS: VG++. DISCS: strong VG++ to NM- light surface scratch on Disc 1 that does not affect play. CHARLIE PARKER (alto sax) with Jay McShann's Orchestra, Clark Monroe's Band, Bob Redcross Jam Sessions, Cootie Williams Sextet. Featuring Buddy Anderson, Orville Minor, Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Merrill, Billy Eckstine, John Jackson, Bob Mabane, Gene Ramey, Oscar Pettiford, Gus Johnson, Harold "Doc" West, Walter Brown, and others. The first two volumes of YOUNG BIRD, an outstanding multi-disc overview of the early career of alto saxophone genius Charlie "Bird" Parker, cover the war years 1940-44, when swing was the order of the day and big bands were at their peak. In fact, the earliest tracks here feature the unusual kick of hearing Parker's unmistakable tones--his musical voice seems to have sprung forth fully formed--in the middle of the big band of Jay McShann and his Orchestra, including an assortment of big band blues and standards. Most of the second disc covers tracks from Parker's earliest days as a leader, featuring several lineups of the Charlie Parker Trio. Parker is mostly exploring the blues here, but the Lester Young influence starts to take hold over the course of these tracks, and by the set's third version of "Body and Soul," Parker and cohorts are playing pure bop. 1-1: Kansas City, mid-1940. 1-2: Trocadero Ballroom, Wichita, Kan., Aug. 1940. 1-3, 1-4: KFBI Radio, Wichita, Kan., 30 Nov. 1940. 1-5 to 1-9: KFBI Radio, Wichita, Kan., prob. 2 Dec. 1940. 1-10 to 1-12: Dallas, Tex., 30 April 1941. 1-13: Chicago, 18 Nov. 1941. 1-14 to 1-17: "Blue Network", Savoy Ballroom, New York City, 13 Feb. 1942. 1-18: Clark Monroe's Uptown House, New York City, Jan./March 1942. 2-1 to 2-3: New York City, 2 July 1942. 2-4 to 2-7: Vic Damon Studios, Kansas City, Sep. 1942. 2-8 to 2-10: Savoy Hotel, Room 305, Chicago, 15 Feb. 1943. 2-11 to 2-14: Savoy Hotel, Room 305, Chicago, 28 Feb. 1943. 2-15: Charlie Parker playing along with a Hazel Scott (p) record (Decca 18341, 27 Feb. 1942), 1943. 2-16: Charlie Parker playing along with a Benny Goodman Trio record (Victor 25333, 24 April 1936): Goodman (cl), Teddy Wilson (p), Gene Krupa (d). 1943. 2-17: Charlie Parker playing along with a Benny Goodman Quartet record (Victor 25644, 30 July 1937): Goodman (cl), Teddy Wilson (p), Lionel Hampton (vib), Gene Krupa (d). 1943. 2-18: Savoy Ballroom, New York, late 1944. Grading is visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY. MINT means factory sealed, never opened or played. NM is opened but in visually brand new, out-of-the-packaging clean condition. NM- is not NM! Its a grade above VG++ and below Near Mint - it does not imply perfect. In my terminology Scratches are feeler type and Scuffs are just cosmetic and usually inaudible. DISCLAIMER.
