Description: Parade Ground and Company Quarters, Fort Douglas, Utah Author: Savage, Charles Roscoe. [C. R. Savage] [Boudoir Cabinet Card] Title: Parade Ground and Company Quarters, Fort Douglas, Utah Publication: Salt Lake City, UT: C.R. Savage, Photo, [c.1894] Description: Photograph. Albumen photograph [13 cm x 21 cm] mounted on a boudoir cabinet card with gilt edges [also 13 cm x 21 cm]. No backstamp. Title and photographer attribution is negative-etched along the bottom of the photograph. The mount is slighly warping and curling inward, particularly along the edges. An attractive image with sharp focus and nice contrasts. On the reverse in contemporary ink is the notation "Aug. 1894 - Salt Lake City - Utah" Very Good. A nice view of the grounds of the military installation three miles east of Salt Lake City, which is now part of the University of Utah campus. Fort Douglas became a National Historic Landmark in 1975. The company quarters are centrally framed here at a distance. The American flag flies in the sky far above, supported by an extremely tall flagpole. The parade grounds are in the foreground, with deciduous trees at each side. Taken in wintertime, the snowy Wasatch Mountains can be seen faintly beyond. A striking image from the renowned Mormon pioneer photographer, Charles Roscoe Savage, who is best known for his images of the linking of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. Savage was a prolific photographer of the American West in general, and of Utah and the Mormon experience in particular. He thoroughly documented the early settlement and development of Salt Lake City, including the long and arduous construction of the Mormon Temple over several decades. He also photographed many Indigenous North Americans, and is credited for taking the first photographs of what would later become Zion National Park.
