Description: GREAT BRITAINPRE-STAMP FREE POSTAL FRONT COVER** SIGNED BY **CHARLES ARTHUR WALKERIRISH POLITICIANMEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR WEXFORD BOROUGHPostmark: NoneDate: 2nd March 1839Size: 5" x 3"Sent from London to College Green, Dublin A pre-stamp 'Free' postal front signed in the bottom left corner by Charles Arthur Walker (1790-1873) who was an Irish Member of Parliament. Walker was born into a Protestant family at Tykillen, in County Wexford. He studied law at Trinity College, Dublin, but was not called to the bar. He was a deputy-lieutenant of the county, but later stated that he had initially avoided taking other public offices as he was "of retired habits", and preferred to spend his time on country pursuits.Walker stood in Wexford Borough for the Irish Repeal Association at the 1831 UK general election, and was elected the Member of Parliament. However, he stated that he would only vote for a repeal of the Act of Union if injustices around ballots and poor laws were perpetuated. Walker held his seat until he stood down at the 1841 UK general election. He died in 1873, still living at TykillenPrior to the introduction of postage stamps in 1840, Members of Parliament and the House of Lords were allowed the use of a free postal service in which to conduct their Parliamentary business. A 'Free Front' is the address piece only which has been cut from a postal entire cover, and which was usually signed by the politician or peer of the realm. Although not stamped as 'Free' this front has been signed.**************************************************************************All items are promptly posted out in secure board-backed envelopesand we always combine postage on multiple purchasesBIBLIO HISTORIA * AUTOGRAPHS * BOOKS & EPHEMERA * POSTAL COVERS * POSTCARDS * Visit our ebay shop to see our full range of rare and interesting itemsNew items are added most days!** THANK YOU FOR LOOKING ** ************************************************************************** Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
