Description: A rare opportunity to purchase a CEREMONIAL BANDSMEN CLOAK OR BOAT CLOAK by Thomas Pratt & Sons Ltd The clasp seems to have been added at a later date so the cloak may have originally been a clerics cloak as that was the speciality of this particular firm of tailors. It is certainly the largest cloak I have ever had but it is much too big for me otherwise it would have been a keeper. This is ideally suited for someone around 6ft tall or more . PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VERY LARGE AND HEAVY WOOL CLOAK PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE A FEW MOTH HOLES BUT NOTHING TOO SIGNIFICANT. I have two similar items for sale , see my items for sale, by Gieves but one by this tailoring company is a first and extremely rare. I can only guess at the age of this item but believe it to be prior to WW2 and post WW1 the tailors label although present does not have a date. MEASUREMENTS PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VERY LARGE CLOAK No size label, all measurements are approximate: Across "shoulder"s: 24” Across the chest by the clasp 31” Bottom of Collar to hem: 52.5” Top of collar to hem 56” SOME HISTORY OF THE FAMILY 28 TRINITY STREET HISTORY OF 28 TRINITY STREET 1861 Robert Chatton, 50, gardener, b Norfolk Ann, 58, b Cambridge Thomas K Hunt, 34, solicitor’s clerk, b Cambridge Sarah, 37, b Cambridge ……………………………………………………………………. 1865 Pratt founded tailor’s business 1871 1881 Thomas D Pratt, 54, tailor & robe making employing 5 men & 1 boy, b Cambridge Mary A E, 52, b Cambridge Albert W, 19, b Cambridge Ernest E, 16, b Cambridge Edward W Wakefield, lodger, 18, university student, b Westmoreland Martha M Knightley, servant, 19, servant, b Histon 1891 1901 Susannah Haslop, widow, 35, lodging house keeper, b Cambridge Horace H, 6, b Cambridge Constance M, 3, b Cambridge Ethel Jane Rout, visitor, 24, butcher’s clerk, b Herts Rose Green, servant, 16, servant, b Herts Rebuilt 1910 in C18 style, in general character with street; 3 storeys; brick; stone cornice below parapet; 4 windows, hung sashes, glazing bars; shop front 5 bays divided by Ionic pilasters with entablature and windows with glazing bars. It was established in 1865 by Thomas Pratt and acquired by Aid H.T. Wing in 1897. Until the First World War about 80% of the trade was from undergraduates who ordered three or four suits at a time. Today students on grants cannot afford high prices for hand-made clothes and they rely on professional and business men for their trade. Customer’s patterns and records will be transferred to their London office and a cutter will visit Cambridge at regular intervals. (Cam.
