Description: Circa 1940's C&E Watch Makers Kit This is a very nice example of a 1940's era C&E Watchmakers Kit in very nice condition overall. It appears to be mostly complete with 170 stakes, stumps, anvils, etc. This unique example has a gorgeous Mahogany box that looks very clean and hasn't had a plate or a handle mounted to it. The inside is all wood, no plastic. It has a good looking staking frame (staking tool) that appears to operate well and the kit has been gently gone through, organized, detailed, and the box cleaned up. Condition / Notes I don't believe this box had an ID plate or handle mounted to the exterior, but it looks like an original box for this kit. The varnish used in this era tends to weather over the years and it was due for a light sanding and cleanup. I didn't sand out the bottom completely, which still shows the age of the box, but it was cleaned up and sealed, scuffed and sprayed with satin lacquer giving it a lovely understated finish that shows off the nicely matched grain. As best I can tell, this should be a pre mid-1940's era piece. Somewhere in the mid 40's they started including the Moseley staking tool and often plastic bits which this one does not have. The insert is all wood and has their Watch-Craft staking frame. I had to organize the tool set as best as possible without a manual, and I believe it had all but maybe 1 stake, if that, and the additional tools were missing maybe just 1 or 2 numbers in the set, if it came with those when new, leaving a total of 5 or so total empty spots on the whole board. What is there is all numbered and appears to be matched, I don't think this set was pieced together. For wear, the chrome has a little pitting on the staking frame, might buff out, but I didn't get too aggressive with the cleanup. I did wipe down all the stakes, they could be due for a little oiling, but were just gently wiped prior to fitting. Some have very light discoloration, and a few of the little stumps also have a bit on the face. I am not an expert on these kits, but I'm picking up a little bit of know-how...and have maybe a dozen more kits to sort through. I'll post as they become available. Please feel free to share any feedback with me good or constructive. These pieces come from my dad's collection mostly purchased in the 70's and 80's.C&E HistoryC&E Marshall Co. was a prominent American manufacturer of watchmaking tools, founded in 1929 and active through the 1960s. Based in Chicago, Illinois, the company became well known for its affordable yet reliable tools, including its popular staking sets. After World War II, C&E Marshall acquired the Moseley Company and its staking tool line, which allowed them to compete directly with other leading brands like Kendrick & Davis (K&D). The acquisition led to the release of the Moseley Staking Tool under the Marshall brand, a more budget-friendly alternative to K&D's models. C&E Marshall’s staking sets included a range of stakes (punches) and stumps (anvils), designed for precise watchmaking tasks such as jewel and balance staff work. Today, C&E Marshall's tools remain respected for their craftsmanship and contribution to the art of horology, continuing to be appreciated by those who value quality and precision in watchmaking.Sources: adelstein-workshop, kanddinverto, Smithsonian Libraries Trade Literature CollectionsPackagingThis set has been carefully wrapped up with attention paid to keep everything in place, so don't worry about having to reorganize it, just unwrap the holder with care when you get there. The box and staking frame are separate. I'm a little nutso about packing so it's in an oversized box with plastic and peanuts and foam wrap, etc. I generally ship within 1 business day of ordering.
