CDV of Benjamin McCulloch – Texas Ranger & Confederate General

Description: CDV of Benjamin McCulloch – Texas Ranger & Confederate General This photograph was taken from the original 1857 salt print by Earles’ Galleries, Philadelphia. The pencil ID is in the hand of General Robert Patterson and from his family CDV album.Benjamin McCulloch has a rich historical career, beginning in 1836 when he followed his Tennessee neighbor, David Crocket to Texas, to join the army there under Sam Houston. He arrived in Texas just after the fall of the Alamo, and later commanded on the “Twin Sisters” cannons that were used at the Battle of San Jacinto. Promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Texas Army by Houston, he left to join the Texas Rangers and was chief of scouts of that unit in the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor. He later had an important roll in putting to rest the ongoing violence between Brigham Young’s Morman Colony in Utah, and the U.S. Government. At the outbreak of the Civil War, McCulloch was promoted to Colonel in the Confederate Army and soon after Jefferson Davis placed him in command of the Indian Territory as a brigadier general. McCulloch was killed in March of 1862 at the Battle of Pea Ridge.Benjamin McCulloch’s images are quite rare, and usually this image (from the original salt print by Jesse Whitehurst of Virginia) that were photographed from the original by many other Civil War era photographers.Fine condition. (the Patterson photo album is not included in this lot)
