Years leading up to the war he served as Capt. of the Harrison Valley Guards, which was organized in 1859. He was present with his company at the hanging of John Brown. January 1861, he was made Col. of the 4th Regt. Va. Vols. They were merged with the 10th Va. Infantry.. While leading his regiment up Sitlington's Hill near McDowell, Va. he was struck by two bullets in the forehead. - Please take the time to read additional information on Col.
