Description: Hand-and-a-Half Knightly Bastard Sword & ScabbardBlunt Sparring & Steel FightingHigh Carbon Forged Spring Steel BladeRe-enactment, Live Combat & Stage Combat *Historically Accurate SM36040 ••• A close recreation of the famous Oakeshott Type XVIIIa. A design dated between 1400 - 1450 according to Records of the Medieval Sword, with some small refinements made to make it safe for reenactment and stage use. See online article 'Spotlight" Oakshott Type XVIII Swords' by Sean A. Flynt for excellent information on design and effectiveness of this style sword. The Tourney Series from Kingston Arms aim to set a new industry standard in live combat sparring weapons. They feature thru-tang handle construction, a peened thru-tang stainless steel pommel and guard, and 2mm rounded edge thickness that make these impressive weapons and build on predecessors designs. The cord wrapped leather grip feels exceptional in the hand with an oval cross section and slight barrel shape and is large enough to accommodate armoured hands. A respectable fuller runs the length of the blade to lighten counter-balance the sword overall as well as strengthening the blade against shearing blows. A wood core and leather wrapped scabbard tipped with a stainless chape comes with each sword. Further Tourney Series models are the Viking Sword and Medieval Single-Hand Sword. The blade is forged from 9260 high carbon spring steel and is tempered to about 50 HRC, providing a durable, long lasting sword. The guard features the 'King-Peen' system where a steel tab on the guard under the grip that is pinned through the tang of the sword. This process keeps the guard from going loose after a lengthy campaign without compromising the strength of the hilt. The pommel is pressed into place and hot peened. Combine these two processes and you get a sword that rings like a bell when struck! This one just releases, the Hand-and-a-Half Knightly sword. Others coming soon. These were commissioned by CAS Iberia as an alternative to the Paul Chen Hanwei practical swords, and initial impression of experienced steel fighters in my group is GOOD! The 9260 spring steel should prove to be more resilient and you’ll see in video reviews the blades even have a slight flex to them. The larger grips are especially nice for gauntleted hands. The wider edges (2mm vs Hanwei 1.56 mm_ and slightly wider, more rounded tip are nice refinements as well that make these safer for sparring. On the whole, most Cold Steel swords are tempered very well, but tend to be a bit thick. The 9260 gets the same and a better toughness without needing such a beefy blade, so the end result is - 9260 is the best in terms of durability. I really haven't seen anything else out there in this price range that comes close. Imported by CAS Iberia * CAS Iberia (importer for Hanwei, Paul Chen & Tinker Pearce designs, as well as Kingston Arms Tourney series) practical swords are all based on authentically styled swords but tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by most of today’s re-enactment societies. The blades are crafted from high-carbon steel, hardened to low to mid 50s HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. While the blades are substantial, just like the originals they are fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics. They feature 1/16” wide edges and rounded tips for safety. The tangs are also substantial, with radiused corners at the blade shoulders and no welds.
