By allowing "body float" (the movement of a slot car body from it's chassis), it acts as 'suspension' allowing for lateral body movement, improved handling, less de slotting and faster laps. Unlike loosening the stock screws, that will eventually will come completely loose and lost. These screws have a smooth unthreaded shaft area (on average, half of it's length) that allows for the body screws to be tight while allowing body rocking movement. Phillips head.
