Description: Carolina Allspice, (Sweetshrub), Calycanthus floridus, Shrub Seeds Hardy, Adaptable, Easy to Grow, Showy Fragrant Flowers, Fragrant Foliage, Fall Colors, Attracts Butterflies, Cold Tolerant Carolina Allspice is a beautiful dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which slowly grows 6 to 10 feet tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. It features very fragrant (especially in the evening), reddish-brown to maroon flowers, 2 inches across, which bloom at the ends of short branchlets in spring. Flowers give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits (seed capsules) which mature in fall and persist throughout the winter. The leaves of the Carolina Allspice are lustrous, dark green (pale beneath), ovate to elliptic to 6 inches long and turning yellow in fall. The leaves are aromatic when bruised. The quality and intensity of the fragrance can vary widely from plant to plant. Carolina Allspice has many common names, all alluding to the aromatic properties of its leaves, bark, twigs, roots and best of all, the wonderfully fruity scent produced by the unusual flowers. Calycanthus oil, distilled from the flowers, is an essential oil used in some quality perfumes. The delightful fragrance of its flowers turns this nice little shrub into a real winner. Dry the flowers, leaves, twigs and bark to use in potpourri. Leaf: Opposite, simple, oval to elliptical, entire margins, 3 to 6 inches long, smooth dark green above, whitened and pubescent below. Soft and fuzzy to the touch. Turning golden yellow in autumn. Flower: Dark chocolate brown to maroon, 1 to 2 inches across, numerous sepals and petals, strong strawberry like odor, appearing April to July. Fruit: Green turning to light brown, somewhat woody at maturity, bell-shaped "capsule", 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, borne on a stalk, matures in late summer early fall, persistent. Twig: Moderate in texture, brown; swollen at the opposite, U-shaped leaf scars; fragrant when broken, faint ridges or lines often run down from nodes; buds round and hairy, no end bud. Bark: Light brown, thin and lenticeled, fragrant. Form: Dense, rounded shrub to 10 feet.
