Description: We’ve got a small collection of fairings and antique porcelain that we’ll be listing this week! Rare and hard to find trinket box in the manner of a buffet or sideboard. Attributed to Conte Boehm Germany. Top removes. Excellent condition with only minor wear consistent with age. Size is 6” x 3-1/2” x 2” China fairings are so named because they were given away as prizes at fairs during 1850-1899, in much the same way that we would win a stuffed animal at a fair today, although some were manufactured simply for sale. They first started appearing in the middle of the nineteenth century and remained popular until the start of the First World War. Most fairings were manufactured in Germany by Conta and Boehme. This company developed a mass production method that no other company could match, thereby achieving an advantage over other firms. Many pieces were unsigned however so the maker of this specific piece is unknown.
