Italy's most famous contribution to children's literature was first serialised in a children's newspaper, Giornale per i bambini, Rome, 1881-83. Beginning as La Storia di un Burratino, the title later changed to "Le Avventure di Pinochio". In the last of these pieces the subversive Pinocchio is hanged and dies. Public demand caused Collodi to continue the very popular story, so in 1883 these were republished in book form in Florence, and then in English as part of the Children's Library Series in 1892. This edition is now very uncommon and due to its notoriously fragile construction, it is particularly rare in nice condition. "Thomas Fisher Unwin was born on January 24, 1848 in London.
