Description: Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 2 This listing is for the book, the Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 2, autographed by the author. The book will ship the next day after payment, but not on Sunday. It will also be available at comic shops around August 7, 2024 or a week later and elsewhere online, and will be available at the 2024 Baltimore Comic Con if it doesn't sell out first. If your comic shop does not have copies in stock, the shop can re-order the book and get it within about two weeks, so you are encouraged to buy it elsewhere if you don't want to order it on eBay from me. But they probably can't offer you an autographed copy. Talk to your local dealer. If your local dealer won't order it for you, I do have copies for sale. If you don't want it autographed, you can make me an offer of $220, and I will sell it without an autograph. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 2 is a large 108 page book that reproduces 13 complete Carl Barks 4-tier stories with large art size in the actual size that the art was originally drawn in glorious black and white. The image area is 16x23.25 inches and with one full page of art on each book page. The book is about 18 inches wide and 26 inches tall (46x66 cm) and weighs over 8 pounds. Looking at these pages as printed in this book is like looking at the pages fresh from the Carl Barks’s drawing board. Beginning in November 1943, Barks started drawing in the large size of 16 inches by 23.25 inches and continued to draw that size for the rest of his career with only very rare exceptions. In 2025, Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 3 will be published completing a set of all Carl Barks' comic book art for MGM comic books, published from proofs of the original artwork and at the same size as the art was drawn. There is also a preliminary picture of the cover design for Volume 3 among the pictures, although that may not be the final cover. My earlier book, the Carl Barks Original Art Edition (Volume 1) presents a nice overview of Carl Barks' work for the MGM comics for people interested in the art of Carl Barks and it is available in another listing and also at comic shops. It provides a relatively inexpensive opportunity to own high quality copies of his art at the size it was drawn. Volume 1 is approximately 14.3 x 20.3 inches and is large enough to print Barks' 5 early 3-tier MGM stories at the size his pages were drawn in 1942 and most of 1943, 12.5 x 17.75 inches image area, one art page to the book page. It also contains 4 of his later and larger 4 tier stories that are printed sideways so that if you hold the book sideways, you can see a full page of Barks art printed actual size on each double page spread for these 4 later stories. It was printed in an edition of over 500 copies, and copies remain available. Volume 2 is a more expensive book printed in an edition of about 150 copies for a smaller audience of people who are interested enough in Barks' work to want to own all of his MGM work in high resolution full original art size copies. Volume 3, to be published in 2025 is expected to have a similar audience, print run, and price. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes are Artist-Edition-type-books very similar to IDW’s Artist Editions, or Fantagraphics’ Studio Editions, and similar books from other publishers. All these books reproduce the original art, usually in the full size that it was originally drawn, usually from new scans or photographs of the original art. So looking at the art in these books is very close to looking at the original art, often close enough that if you didn’t know it was printed in a book, you would think it WAS the original art. If you cut a page out of the book and framed it under glass, in many cases you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. In the Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes, the pages are printed from proofs which are derived from the 7 x10 inch photo negatives taken of the original art by Western Publishing between 1943 and 1947, because none of the original art for these stories actually survives. The proofs have resolution to spare, and can be blown up even larger than the original art and still look excellent, sharp, clear, and detailed. This is the first time these pages have been reproduced in the size they were actually drawn. Except for several expensive European limited editions of the formerly "unpublished" censored Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge pages, this is the first time any Carl Barks pages have been reproduced and sold at the size they were drawn. Look at the pictures: The first 4 pictures show Volume 2 , volume 1 & 2 side by side, volumes 1, 2, and 3 side by side, and finally my proof copy of Volume 3 side by side with a copy of the Prince Valiant Studio Edition. The next picture shows volume 1, 2, and my proof copy of volume 3 with meter sticks and yardsticks next to them plus 3 of my 8.5x11 paperback Barks books. The following picture shows a side view of the 3 hard cover books plus a volume of the Carl Barks Library, and the same 3 paperbacks. The next picture shows the same Barks page as printed in a double page spread in volume 1 and as a single page in volume 2. Next are 5 double page spread showing 2 pages in volume 2 with the book laying open and flat, some with meter sticks or yard sticks next to them, and the back cover of Volume 2 still sealed in its bag. The next pictures show size comparisons of a 4-tier Barks pages from volume 1 to the Don Rosa Artist Edition, the Prince Valiant Studio Edition, and to an actual sized facsimile print of a Prince Valiant original art page that was included with the Prince Valiant Studio Edition. Finally there are 2 pictures comparing the size of Volume 2 to the size of 4 volumes of Another Rainbow's hard cover Carl Barks Library and to 2 volumes of Fantagraphics' Complete Carl Barks Disney Library and 2 volumes of the Carl Barks Library. Volume 1 and 2 are lithographed hard cover books with sewn signatures and can be opened to lay flat. Volume 3, to be published in 2025, will be the same. If you don't buy it here, where can you buy the Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes? Diamond Comics Distribution is the exclusive distributor of the books in the USA and distributes to most comic book shops in the USA and also to some in other countries. It is also available from Comic und Spielzeug in Stuttgart, Germany, which also can mail copies to the European Union purchased from me on eBay. If you patronize or know of a comic book shop nearby, you can order a copy at your local comic book shop, and some shops also advertise and sell books and comics online. The Diamond catalog, Previews, lists the volume 1 as being available on May 31, 2023, but the books were actually available in comic shops starting May 24, 2023. The March, 2023 issue of Previews catalog has a write-up about the Carl Barks Original Art Edition starting on page 355. You can also find a book announcement online by Googling Carl Barks Kim Weston John Garvin. You can also Google youtube Carl Barks Original Art Edition to see a video of the book. The June, 2024 issue of Previews catalog has a write-up about the Carl Barks Original Art Edition Volume 2 starting on page 375. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes have not be available on Amazon, though I will soon be listing them on Amazon at a somewhat higher price, so you are encouraged to buy it elsewhere, at a comic shop or if you see copies for sale at comic conventions or shows. If you see copies of the Carl Barks Comics and Stories Original Art Edition advertised, that is the way Diamond Comics Distribution advertised the book in its Previews Catalog--it is exactly the same book. In Europe, Comic und Spielzeug, Stefan Brenner’s shop in Stuttgart, Germany, has copies for sale retail, in person or by mail, and may be willing to supply them wholesale in Europe to shops and bookstores as well.
