Description: .Back story is that my dad served in the US Marines during WW2, and a friend had captured these items during the war. He gifted them to my dad when he found out that my dad was entering medical school. The Marine told him it was part of a Field doctor's kit. Unfortunately, there is no information available on this item. It is too rare. This is a field apothecary scale. It is made to be suspended by a silk cord, and a weight is slid along a graduated stylus. The stylus appears to be organic, possibly bone. The cup is also organic, material unknown. It is translucent and very lightweight. The beam is adjustable with a screw type slider. Overall, a very elegant piece. This is similar to the Chinese "Opium Scales" but it is much finer. Clearly shows a level of engineering combined with artistry.
