That's when an extender (sometimes known as a teleconverter) becomes quite handy. This extender increases your effective focal length by 1.4X when paired with a compatible RF Series telephoto lens. If you shoot with Canon RF Series lenses, the Extender RF1.4x may well be worth considering for your kit. It lets you increase the effective focal length of select telephoto lenses by a factor of 1.4, giving you a closer-up look at far-away wildlife or distant landscapes. How does it work? This L Series-grade extender mounts between your camera body and compatible lenses, increasing the stated focal length by 1.4x. For example, when paired with the RF 600mm f/11 IS STM, you get an effective focal length of 840mm. Important note: adding this extender to your lens means you lose one full stop of incoming light. So in the case of the above-mentioned 600mm lens, the aperture goes from f/11 to f/16 — a fairly small lens opening that won't let in a ton of light. You'll want to keep this in mind when calculating your exposure. Use a tripod for best results I highly recommend mounting your camera to a sturdy tripod when using an extender with your telephoto lens. This reduces the lens shake that occurs with ultra-long focal lengths, allowing longer shutter speeds that let in more light.
