It yields by up to 20 mm and thus prevents premature fatigue of your arms on gravel paths. If the pre-assembled suspension is too soft or too firm, elastomers with different firmnesses are available for easy replacement. You need a 4 mm hex tool to swap it out, as only one screw has to be loosened. While riding, you benefit from the lever on the top - with this you can choose between a soft and a firm setting on the road, for example, to reduce the suspension on asphalt roads uphill and thus increase the drive efficiency.
