But there are multiple species of maples, making it as diverse as the population it is often used to represent. This striking silver coin pays tribute to one of several maple species that are native to Canada: the silver maple (Acer saccharinum). This is a fine numismatic coin, not to be confused with ordinary bullion maple leaf coins. It will make a great addition to any collection of fine silver coins, maple leaf coins, and nature themed coins. Special features: This coin features an exceptional depiction of silver maple leaves, which have been beautifully engraved with the artistry and craftsmanship for which the Royal Canadian Mint is internationally renowned. The specimen finish background showcases the design’s finer details, such as the deeply cut, intricate veins that run through each leaf’s lobes and the slightly furled, serrated edges. An excellent addition to any Canadiana or nature-themed collection and a thoughtful gift to mark memorable milestones and treasured achievements. This fine numismatic coin is limited to a worldwide mintage of only 50,000 coins. Did you know that… There are more than 150 different species of maple trees in the world – of the 13 species found in North America, 10 are native to Canada. And at least one type of maple grows naturally in each of Canada’s 10 provinces! The silver maple has many other names: white maple, soft maple, river maple... Its proper name is Acer saccharinum – Acer means “sharp” like a maple leaf’s edges, and identifies it as a maple species; saccharinum refers to the silver maple’s sugary sap. It may not be as sweet as the sugar maple’s famous sap, but it is possible to make maple syrup from many species. Think all maple leaves turn red in the fall? Think again. Come autumn, the silver maple’s leaves change to a pale yellow or rusty brown color – rarely red. If you’re trying to spot a silver maple leaf, look for the leaf’s silvery underside and jagged teeth. Its five–to–seven lobes are also deeply cut and narrower than those of other popular maple species. Watch out, the silver maple can grow fairly quickly! A 10-year-old tree can measure over 21 feet tall, and can eventually rise up to 170 feet tall. Its roots spread aggressively and can cause sidewalks to buckle if there’s not enough space! Design: This coin was designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc. It depicts three silver maple (Acer saccharinum) leaves. With their edges slightly furled, these leaves are positioned in a way that evokes memories of a beautiful autumn day in Canada – it is easy to imagine these leaves gently falling from the majestic silver maple tree onto the ground below. In the foreground, the largest leaf lies on its side as it stretches across the image field; its long petiole rests overtop the smaller, downward-facing leaf at far left. The large leaf’s bottom left lobe overlaps the base of a third leaf behind it. Beautiful engraving adds depth to the image by showcasing the silver maple’s deeply cut veins and serrate leaf margins.34 mm Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace-Making Kit (coin not included) — Transform your favorite 34 mm diameter coin into a pendant necklace with this handy do-it-yourself kit! Many coin dealers “search” all coins when they are received from the Mint. They "cherry-pick" the best coins. Then submit them to be graded, certified, and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc. These graded and certified coins are then sold at higher, premium prices. When a dealer searches coins, those that they sell in original Mint packaging are only lesser quality coins. Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed. Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered. Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces. However, tilting the coin may resulting one side being slightly out of focus. Our goal is to provide clear, high definition photos that accurately represent the coin(s) offered in each of our eBay listings. Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint. We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting. We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits.
