Three of the boys are from Northern families; the fourth is the son of a Southerner who, after the war, took his wife and daughters to Brazil as part of the mass emigration of the Confederados (the boys visit the family in On the Amazon.) Each volume is narrated in the first person by one of the four boys. The writing style and tone are more sophisticated than the later, Stratemeyer-type series, and some moments are very funny indeed. The treating of then-contemporary issues, such as the social awkwardness of meeting relatives who had favored the other side in the war, or discussions of Darwin's theory of evolution, make this a more-than-usually interesting series."Contains several nice illustrations.A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: Cover shows a little wear and light soiling with lightly bumped corners, name in the back, front free endpaper is missing and there is a partial crack in the paper at the hinge but the hinge seems quite firm, several pages have some small tears from the fore-edge where they had been joined and were separated carelessly (see pictures), otherwise in good condition with a solid binding and clean pages.
