Description: WARTIME RUN OF ESCONDIDO HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER Author: [California] Title: WARTIME RUN OF ESCONDIDO HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER Description: A collection of 33 issues, likely the only surviving copies, of The Cougar, the weekly newspaper of Escondido High School in Escondido, California. This run ranges in date from September 25, 1943 to May 23, 1947:Vol. 9, No 2, 3, 14, 35Vol. 10, No. 1-6, 9-16, 21, 23, 28, 35Vol. 11, No. 13, 15, 36Vol. 12, No. 10, 15, 16, 24, 28, 32, 33Located in northern San Diego County city of Escondido, California, Escondido High School was established in 1896 on the former site of a Methodist seminary operated by the University of Southern California. By the time these issues were published, the school had moved to a three-story building just south of the original site that was deemed unsafe in the early 1950s, prompting a move to the school's present location: 1535 North Broadway.Established in 1935, The Cougar was published weekly by the Class in Journalism and devoted to keeping students informed on school athletics, social activities, and other campus news. It's noteworthy that all the editors and much of the staff responsible for these issues are women. Individual issues were available for purchase or by subscription. For example, Volume 10 was offered at three cents an issue or forty cents per semester. The September 15, 1944 issue notes that "the practice of sending free Cougars to the boys in service was adopted."The events and effects of the Second World War are well represented in this collection, including several reports on the student body's contributions to the war bond effort. There is also an "in memoriam" issue commemorating the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ample space is also afforded to cartoons and other amusements, as well as the weekly gossip column with what were in effect the tweets of their day: "Adeline Conway is now going with a sailor. He came to see her Friday evening. Some girls have all the luck."A few issues bear the ink signature of Bill Wilson, likely the cartoonist whose "Bill's Bunk" strip appears in several issues. This supposition is supported by the presence of a small stack of duplicates and other loose leaves that accompany the issues listed above. All issues are mimeographed and bound with staples. Some general toning and wear, with minor soiling to a small number. The first or final leaves are detached but present in a few instances, and there are lipsticks imprints to the rear panel of two issues. Scarce, OCLC locates no holdings.
