Description: This is a rare card. The writing on the back and front beneath the photos identifies the place, subject, and by identifying the location as the Colorado"Territory" it dates the card prior to Colorado's statehood in 1876. W. G. Chamberlain was an influential early photographer of stereo views and it is he who was the photographer and evidently producer and seller of these cards (in Denver). At first this appears to be a photo of a hole in the ground, but on closer examination, when looked at carefully, one can see the figure of a man in the pit, almost dead center, which gives the photo scale. The lower section of the back right of the card tells us the location of this mine, It reads: "Hydraulic Mining/ California Gulch/[Col. Tr?]." We believe it cites the Colorado Territory.
