Identification This painting is not signed. Based on appearance, subject, and age, it is attributed to the listed California artist, William Constable Adam (1846-1931). The exact location depicted in the painting is not known, but it is likely in the Monterey or Pacific Grove areas. The exact age of this painting is not known, but it is either vintage or antique. The frame is more recent than the artwork. Per askART, William Constable Adam specialized in Monterey area views such as local flora, cottage and garden scenes, and sand dunes. He was born in Tweedmouth, England. He studied art in Paris (under August Delecluse), in Glasgow (under Robert Brydall and Greenlees), and in Buenos Aires. Adam immigrated to Boston during the late 19th century. In 1894, he moved to California, where he settled in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. Since he gave art lessons from his cottage in Pacific Grove, he was known as "Professor" Adam. Adam was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Glasgow Art Club. He received medals when he exhibited at the California State Fairs. He also exhibited at Del Monte Art Gallery from 1907 to 1912, at the Berkeley Art Association in 1908, and at the Sorosis Club in 1913. His work is in the Silverado Museum of Saint Helena, California, the Santa Cruz Art Museum, the Shasta State Historical Monument, and in the collection of the City of Monterey. Condition The painting looks very good overall, as shown. It is being sold as it was found. It was likely cleaned at some point, and there probably are some minor paint touch-ups. There are some minor craquelure lines to the lower half. There are minor raised lines on the canvas from the stretcher bars. The frame looks very good, with minor wear. The back side of this piece is as shown. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
