High filler loading >50% is possible but will affect the viscosity and cured mechanical properties. A 'ladder study should be done to determine the optimum filler loading. For general use as a filler for an epoxy resin system, use 30% by weight as a starting point addition has shown a dramatic and balanced improvement in both physical and mechanical properties. The addition of the calcium carbonate was incorporated in the resin component only. Since the resin will not cure without the curing agent, adding the calcium carbonate to the resin component, air bubbles can be allowed to outgas from the mixture by allowing it to stand for an extended period. Gently stir in the calcium carbonate to reduce air entrapment. It is highly recommended that it be added to the resin component or 'PART A' only since the curing agent or PART B is hygroscopic and will absorb and react with moisture that is imbued in the calcium carbonate. The resin component (PART A) is very hydrophilic which will displace the entrapped water molecules from the filler. Water is 10% less dense than epoxy so the displaced water will float to the surface and evaporate, creating an anhydrous solution.
