Description: Cairo And Its Environs Joanne Guide Books Author: Georges Benedite Pub: Hachette & Co c1910 164 pp (+ advertising front and rear) Size: 11 x 16 cm Prior to this copy I was unaware that Hachette had published this series (French, English and German), this being an English version. Mind you it would appear that they couldn't bring themselves to print the advertising in English. Only French products and accommodation advertised. It would seem that not much has changed in a century about our friends across the Channel attitude to us. This lovely vintage item, though in great condition for it's age does have some issues. Pages are tanned mostly at edges. Some breaks in the binding but all pages seem secure. One fold out map opp P160 is missing the end section/fold. see photo. Though the publication date on title page states quite clearly 1910 I see that a local Tourist Agency stocking these guides is shown as opened in 1912 !!. The rear board has a slot for insertion of perhaps map or timetable. If there was anything provided it is no longer present. See photo. There is so much information in this wonderful guide that I should be generous and congratulate Hachette on their work. Even the prices of fares for cabs and donkeys are included. Great couple of pages of pencilled notes from someone's holiday in Cairo in January 1916, also several signatures from former owners. All in all a wealth of research material or wonderful addition to a collection. Thanks for reading, questions, wlecome. Please examine the photos which form part of the listing.
