I AM NOT SELLING ANY RIGHTS TO THE IMAGE, JUST THE PHOTO. Some soiling to rear of paper (PHOTO 2). The printed label on the rear read: "Head on view of the Railton Mobil Special. Cobb's face can be dimly seen under the canopy". Based on other photos I have from the same set that refers to the trip to America for the speed trials as a future event, this actual photo was most likely printed prior to the trip to the US in July 1947. As reflected below, this photos was likely taken in June 1947. THE REAR OF THE PHOTO HAS THE FOLLOWING STAMP PLEASE CREDITART STREIB STUDIO955 SOUTH HOPE STLOS ANGELES 15, CALIFMICHIGAN 2338 and in pencil "14086" (which is the file number of the photo) THE LISTED PHONE NUMBER OF "MICHIGAN 2338" WAS PHASED OUT PRIOR TO 1960. Doing some research on the photos of the Railton Mobil Special, the Art Streib Studio was responsible for many of the photos sold online in the past 20 years. The Railton Mobil Special was driven by John Cobb and broke the 400mph speed for the first time in 1947. Because the record included the outward run of 385.645mph and the return run of 403.135, the recorded record was 394.196mph. The bottom line though, is that the return run of the flying mile did exceed 400mph. At the time of the end of the measured mile, the vehicle was at 410mph and still accelerating. While plans were made to try again, bad weather ended that. According to an old article, the newly named Railton Mobil Special was displayed before the press in late June 1947 and left England for the US in July. That would date this photo as likely June 1947 Cobb decided not to race the Railton again unless his record was broken. The record held for 16 years and Cobb had died twelve years prior while attempting a water speed record in his Crusader jet boat. I will be listing a half dozen actual photos of the car plus an illustration of the measured mile and surroundings by US Route 40. A few of those photos I have been unable to find anywhere online monamutflatfile4
