ca 1930s Black & Yellow Bakelite Square Backgammon Checkers 1.75", Harold Thorne

Description: Description: The item up for bids is a circa 1930s set of black and yellow Bakelite octagonal backgammon checkers attributed to Harold Thorne. Even though they are clearly octagonal Thorne referred to the design as “Square Backgammon Men” and they were retailed at the time by R.H. Macy. They are fairly large at about 1-3/4” in diameter by about 7/16” thick. The edges are square and flat with no bevel. They come housed in a leather wrapped box with a pair of dice. It’s a great set, they have good weight, are fun to stack, and the colors are to die for -- have some fun and bid! Dimensions: The checkers measure about 1-3/4” in diameter by about 7/16” thick, and the set of 30 weighs about 748 grams. The dice are 5/8” square. (Note: measurements are approximate) Condition: The set is in fair to good vintage condition. The checkers have age appropriate stacking and handling wear with scuffs, scratches, and dings. There is the typical surface dullness from sliding wear. There are a couple of incidental edge chips, the last two photos show the worst instances. The dice are in good shape, no chips, dot paint is good. The box is structurally sound with surface wear and tear but the strap is torn near the base. The snap does work. The pictures are the best indicator as to condition, please use the zoom feature and check them out.
