Description: Circa 1930's-1950's early recast of an incomplete Chimpanzee iron mechanical bank. The incomplete example of this Chimpanzee bank, which we are offering in this listing, are parts from a bank which was produced (in very small numbers) in the 1930's-1950's by the Selafian brothers of Philadelphia, Pa. They made the bank to sell to mechanical bank collectors who could not afford the 1880's original version. The original bank was designed by Louis Kyser & Alfred C. Rex. The design of the bank was covered under a patent with number D-232511. The original version (WHICH THIS IS NOT) was manufactured by the Kaiser & Rex Company which was also located in Frankford, Pa. The incomplete 1930's-1950's recast bank which we are offering measures approximately 6 1/8 inches from front to back by 4 5/8 inches high (if finial were present bank would be taller) by 5 7/8 inches from right to left. The weight of the of the two halves of the bank is 1 pound 9.7 ounces. In this listing we are offering the two largest component pieces of the bank which are the front & back castings with the attached interior bell. A significant majority of the original Selafian brothers 1930's-1950's paint still remains present on the two halves. The inside has some surface rust. There are no touchups to the paint, no breaks, & no repairs. However, a number of pieces which would complete the bank, are NOT present in this offering. Missing from the bank are the following components: top finial, monkey with log book & operating lever, backdrop behind monkey, baseplate with trap, & the tin insert for behind the windows. The Selafian brothers produced a number of different designs of recast mechanical banks (in very small numbers) in the 1930's-1950's. Over the many years since their recast banks were produced the banks that the Selafian brothers made have become more & more in demand by collectors. In some cases, their productions are even harder to find than the original earlier versions. An interesting & entertaining offering of these recast iron bank components which are now approximately 61 to 90 years old (whereas the original version would now be approximately 130 to 139 years old). In an article published in the August 2018 issue of the MBCA bank publication about the Selafian brothers banks which was written by Bill Robison (a long time bank collector) Bill says in the article that their banks were made after 1945 & before 1960. However, for a number of decades we have always uniformly heard collectors say that the Selafian banks dated to the 1930's. So, we will have to leave it up to the buyer of this listing to make their own judgement as to the date period of the Selafian productions. In any event, all of the Selafian brothers banks are rare. Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value. This item is inventory #8539.
