C1976 Ink Portrait Sketch. Alexander Calder On Hotel George V Paris Letterhead

Description: For sale is an original portrait sketch in ink of the legendary American sculptor Alexander (Sandy) Calder (1898 - 1976) The drawing features a portrait in profile of Calder by an unknown artist. The drawing being on what looks like a lobby note pad paper from the well-known art deco style Hotel George V in Paris, France. We acquired this several years ago and we really do not know anything else about it. At one point we considered sending it into the Alexander Calder foundation for further information but we didn't think it to be by the hand of Alexander Calder. The drawing came with a newspaper clipping showing Calder meeting with the iconic American artist Georgia O'Keefe, as well as another picture of him meeting with the renowned arts patron and benefactor Sandra Payson. There is an article on the reverse unrelated to the Calder article and it mentions a date of 1976. We know Calder died in 1976 so this looks to be shortly before his passing. The portrait seems very similar to the profile photo of Calder meeting with Georgia O'Keefe. Our guess is that someone saw the photo and made the sketch perhaps while reading the newspaper in the hotel in Paris. But we are uncertain. Overall condition is pretty good. The paper being adhered to a backer board, probably with double-sided tape. Unframed. Measurements Drawing - 5 1/2" x 4 1/8" Matting - 8" x 6 1/2"
