Item 485614 ◊ ca 1949 Postcard of Sunnyside Beach Amusement Park, Roller-coaster and Other Rides, Toronto, Canada Rare and historical "ca 1949 Postcard of Sunnyside Beach Amusement Park, Roller-coaster and Other Rides, Toronto, Canada." Copyrighted and published by Valentine-Black Co. Publishing Co, Ltd, Toronto, Canada. In the heyday of waterfront amusement parks, Toronto had FOUR of them. One of them was The Sunnyside Beach Amusement Park.A little history: In 1912, Toronto’s city city council members voted to erect an amusement park at Sunnyside Beach on lake Ontario. Work stopped when the First World War, but began again in 1919. It was soon evident that a new roadway was required, and the amusement park was officially opened in 1922. It provided an opportunity for citizens to strolled the boardwalk, swim in the lake, and dive into the new swimming pool.During the next few year, the amusement park was completed. Popular features were the concession stands, a dance pavilion, and the Band Stand. And of course there were the rides, the Merry-Go-Round, Aeroplane Ride and of course the wooden roller coaster, named the Flyer. The golden era of Sunnyside was the 1930s and 1940s. And in 1955, the Toronto Harbour Commission ordered the demolition of Sunnyside, and built the Gardiner Expressway and the widened Lakeshore Boulevard on the land. This amazing postcard is in very good condition, with a little bit of corner wear (one corner is dog-eared) There is no surface or edge wear, though it has the general sense that the card was used. And it was used. It was sent through the mail to a Egi Legau in Cleveland, Ohio. The postmark is Sept. 20, 1949. There was a stamp at one time, but it was removed by the recipient. The writing is in french and it extends to the front as well as the back. The sender certainly must have had a good time at the Sunnyside Beach Park. We will leave to the winner of this cards to translate it. (Please see the photos above, to confirm the condition of this card.)
