Includes a biographical sketch of the Scottish poet and playwright, with illustrations by John MacWhirter and George Hay. Alongside Thomson's better-known poems, The Seasons and The Castle of Indolence, the volume also contains his pastorals and hymns. Prior owner's small ink inscription to front pastedown reads 'Cecil H. Butot. Dec 17' 1918'. Prior owner's bookplate to front endpaper. Ink inscription to front free endpaper reads 'Miss Slater. From Mr and Mrs James with best birthday wishes. Nov 9. 1899' Undated. Dated using JISC. None published by Jonn Walker listed, but same pagination and illustrators to editions published in1876 and 1877 by William P. Nimmo. Dated using these editions from copies held in Swansea and Newcastle Universities. CONDITION In leather binding with painted boards. Externally, generally smart. The spine is a little rubbed, as are the boards. Lightly bumped to the head of the spine. Front hinge starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound, although a little tender at page xvi. Pages are lightly age toned, with light scattered spots throughout, primarily to the fore edges of pages.
