Sweetmeats - a succulent Confectionery delicacy prepared with either Honey, Sugar, or Preserves such as Candied Fruits, Sugar-covered Nuts, Sugarplums, Bonbons, Candy Sticks or Balls etc, were commonplace on Late 18th and throughout the 19th Century Dessert Table. Elaborate table displays included colorful Cakes, fresh Fruit and Sweetmeats, all showcasing the Wealth & Taste of the Lord & Lady of the Manor. Sweetmeat Baskets graced the tables in various Shapes, Forms and Materials. Commonplace in Wealthy homes were large Epergnes in Silver, Cut Glass and Porcelain, as well as Small Silver Baskets, Glass, and Porcelain versions. ____________________________________________________________ Measurements and specifics: 11" at it's longest Length; 8-1/2" at it's widest Width; 2-1/4" Height; Kidney-shaped Base dimension of 6-1/2" by 4"; 1 pound 7.6 ounces unwrapped Weight. The Sweetmeat Pedestal Platter is a Solidly-potted dark Earthenware/Ironstone platter/tray which features a Beautifully designed Rococo-style edge with raised stylized Acanthus leaves; Floral design of a Central Fruit Basket and surrounding Fruits & Foliage - quite rare a pattern when compared to the many Romantic Staffordshire, English-Potter executed Scenes which were so very popular at that period in time, as they continue to be today; Central Design features a beautiful stylized Basket abundant with mixed Fruits - Melons, Grapes, Peaches, Cherries, Strawberries, Pears & Foliage, surrounded with groupings of Fruits & Foliage along the outer perimeter of the Rococo shaped Platter; Clobbered (Hand-painting over-glaze) Orange-Red paint highlights the various Fruits & Foliage, as well as the outer Scalloped, Rococo edge; A One-half inch (1/2") border consists of Flora and small Geometric Trellis hatching; Pedestal base repeats the border along it's raised edge as well; An unusual feature to the Kidney-shaped Rococo design is the addition of a Gold-Gilt Scroll "Key-hole" oval opening at one end - positioned similar to the finger hold of an Artist's palette board; Reverse exhibits a Small version of the Central Design - A Fruit Basket under-glaze Manufacturer's mark in Light-Blue/Grey Transfer-print stating "Fruit Basket" within the Basket and Iron-Red painted Numerals, "3474" - In All likelihood the Painter's Identification number for payment; Bluish Pearl Glaze is visible along edges where pooling of glaze remained as well as within any available crease or crevice; Condition of Light Blue/Grey Transfer ware Pedestal Sweetmeat Platter is Good - slight areas of glaze roughness with accompanying slight mellowing along rim-edge; General overall crazing of glaze, Areas of Mellowing / Toning of body colour, Several small chips/flakes along Scalloped rim-edge with small areas of age-mellowing, Slight loss/wear of Clobbered Orange-red paint, and One (1) 2 - 1/4" hairline running from outer edge towards Pedestal Base; Numerous Pin-point Minute inclusions from firing process present on both surfaces, as well as some Knife/Fork scratches on Obverse surface; Pooling of Bluish/Pearl Glaze noted primarily on Reverse and where mellowing/toning is not present, there exists a Bright overall colour due to the Pearl Glaze of the dark Earthenware body; Expected wear to glaze on Pedestal Base surface - otherwise no major / large chips, missing portions, nor prior repairs are present; Unique Display example of Light Blue/Grey Transfer Earthenware Sweetmeat Pedestal Platter with Clobbered Hand-painted colour in a Rare-to-find pattern with attribution to an Early English Manufacture. ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ As most auctions are of Used, Antique or Vintage items, we will guarantee them to be as described, to the best of our ability, with both descriptions and photos. Please note - Some auctions may be listed as "For Parts Only", and should be considered as such.
