Description: Child’s ‘PERSIA’ Tea Sugar w/ Lid, John Ridgway, c 1850 – 1860, Miniature Staffordshire Reference: Doris Lechler, ‘English Toy China,’ Figure No. 77A, pp 31, 143-4. This is a miniature child’s Tea Sugar with Lid transfer printed in black outline with hand painted orange-rust with luster on a creamy white background, with deep orange outlines on the borders and finial resulting in a very striking piece. The base and body of the Sugar are quatrefoil, and prominent finial with curlique flourishes is perfect for the Victorian period it was produced in; John Ridgway was made “Royal Potter” to Queen Victoria after the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Sugar with Lid is marked on the base with the pattern number 4448, and the pattern name is ‘PERSIA.’ This Sugar with Lid would have been part of a complete Tea Set for a child and was made by John Ridgway, Staffordshire, England. Dimensions:Sugar with Lid: 3.5” W x 3.5” D x 4” HThere are several tiny dings to the deep orange line at the top of the sugar bowl. Please ignore any white glare marks in the photos. This child’s Sugar with Lid is in excellent condition, with the exceptions listed above. Minor glaze pooling, crazing, and typical firing imperfections sporadically may appear consistent with production from this period of time. Presented as is and as found.
