Description: C. 1845 - 1862 – PEARLS OF SACRED POESIE – Very Rare Antiquarian Book on Poetry C. 1845 - 1862 – PEARLS OF SACRED POESIE – Very Rare Small Antiquarian Book, a compilation of poetry, collected from various British Poets. Bound in red cloth, with gilt decorations, all edge gilt pages, a stunning illustrated frontispiece by H. Corbould and C. Heath and 2 further illustrated plates, one by H. Corbould and C. Heath. Charles Heath was a British engraver (1785 – 1848) and one of the most influential figures in British book production during the first half of the 19th century. Henry Corbould was also a British engaver and artist (1787 – 1844). Published by Darton And Co., Holborn Hill, London. Darton And Co. were publishers and printers, founded by William Darton in 1787. They moved to Holborn Hill in 1804 and remained there until 1866. The firm’s name changed over the years, but they were known as Darton And Co from 1845 until 1862 and so, although the book is undated, I am able to date it to within this time frame. There is also a pen inscription on the front free endpaper, which is dated May 21st 1876. This is an extremely rare book. At the time of listing, I have been unable to find any other editions for sale. The red cloth bound cover is intact and in a good state for a book that is at least 161 years old. There are some small marks, wear (more-so to the edges and spine), small tears in the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine and bumped corners. There are ornate embossed decorations on the boards and gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Inside, the pages are tanned, which is consistent with a book of this age, and there is a little foxing throughout, more-so to the preliminary pages and there are small marks. The pages are in an overall uncreased condition, with just a few light creases or small folds and occasional creases to the central binding area. There are no rips to the pages., Other than the pen inscription on the front free endpaper there is no further pen or pencil inside this book. Between a handful of pages there are cracks in the gutters, or the pages are partially loose. There are no missing pages and so all 256 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 13.6 cm by 9 cm and 2.2 cm wide. It weighs approximately 168 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
