Description: Early John Ridgway ‘NAPIER’ Child’s Miniature Teapot, c 1830, Staffordshire Miniature This is an early, scarce miniature child’s Teapot transfer printed in dark medium blue on creamy earthenware in a pattern named, ‘NAPIER,’ and also sometimes referred to as ‘BATAVIA.’ The design consists of oriental figures: a man in a jetty on a river holding an umbrella over a child with an accompanying woman. In the distance are several other islands with buildings and the forefront is bordered by a fence with a dock area. The spout, handle, collar, and lid are decorated with oriental buildings and a lattice and floral pattern. It is not unusual for adult size patterns to be edited to fit this child’s size Teapot which is what has happened in this case, and therefore, the pattern on one side is missing the complete picture of the woman on the jetty. The original pattern in adult size is more elaborate than this miniature version and has other people in it. This very early Teapot is unmarked but was produced by John Ridgway, Cauldon Place, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, England, c 1830. This scarce, early miniature child’s Teapot in the ‘NAPIER’ pattern measures: (1) Teapot with Lid: 6.75” W x 3.25” D x 3.75” H A small chip on each side of the spout. Please ignore the white glare reflections in the photos. This scarce child’s miniature Teapot is almost 200 years old and is in excellent condition with the exceptions noted above. Occasional transfer slips and smudges, glaze skips and ponding, light crazing, and additional minor typical firing imperfections sporadically may appear consistent with production from this period of time.
