Description: Byzantine Empire Romanus III 1028-1034 AD Nomisma Gold Coin NGC MS We purchased this coin on March 3rd, 2023 as part of a larger collection that consisted of many of these gold Byzantine Empire coins. Each of these coins made during this time are all hand pressed and designed. This coin in particular features Jesus Christ sitting on a throne, wearing a cross nimbus, raising his right hand in benediction while holding the book of Gospels in his left on the front. The back of the coin depicts Romanus on the left, being crowned by the virgin Mary on the right. Romanus has been recorded as a well meaning but ineffective emperor. He disorganised the tax system and undermined the military, personally leading to a disastrous military expedition against Aleppo. He fell out with his wife and foiled several attempts on his throne, including two which revolved around his sister in law Theodora. He died after six years on the throne, allegedly murdered, and was succeeded by his wife's young lover, Michael IV. We have been doing business at this location for 32 years and have never seen a collection of this magnitude and more importantly, of the sheer phenomenal quality of these ancient coins.
