Description: Byron de Wolfe Wandering Poet Signed 1871 Hotel Register Biddeford House Maine Byron de Wolfe Wandering Poet Signed 1871 Hotel Register Biddeford House Maine Click images to enlarge Description Byron de Wolfe, Wandering Poet of New Hampshire, hotel register page of Biddeford House in Biddeford, Maine signed twice for Monday, April 10, 1871 and Tuesday, April 11, 1871, 10 ¼ by 15 ¾ inches, in very good condition. For April 10, de Wolfe has signed his name and residence as Nashua, New Hampshire. For April 11, he has signed his name followed by "Wandering Poet" and then his residence as Nashua, New Hampshire. De Wolfe apparently left the hotel after the 11th because he did not sign the register for Wednesday; the signatures of guests for that day are on the verso of the page and his is not one of them. Byron de Wolfe (1835-1872) was born in Nova Scotia and moved to New England around the age of twenty. He married in 1860 and lived with his wife in Nashua, New Hampshire. To earn a living, he toured New England writing poems quickly at a price less than seven syllables for a penny such that a 64 line poem of seven syllables a line could be purchased for $1. Success came quickly to de Wolfe because many people hired him to write poems about soldiers or regiments who went off to war to fight the Confederacy. When the Civil War ended, he was hired by surviving veterans to write memorial poems of fallen soldiers who fought and died beside them. In his travels, he found that death sold and so wrote poems of disasters, heinous crimes, and fatal workplace accidents that he could sell at or near their locations.
