Description: Method of payment Busts of sacred idols of the Aztecs, Mexico -Chalchiuhtlicue - 1837 Antique Print SUBJECT/TOPIC: This is a very rare "not colored" Italian printed copper plate print. This print (and others form this series) were hand-colored at printing. I have never seen one without the hand-coloring. The top row was to have been in a light tan & the bottom row figures in a deep brown. Busts of sacred idols of the Aztecs, Mexico. Kneeling idol Chalchiuhtlicue with pearl headdress and triangular neckerchief, idol with stone in left hand and hole in chest for incense (copal or xochitlenamactli). A copperplate engraving by Verico. This is a fabulous engraved print. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This "supposed to have been" hand colored engraving by Luigi Giarre ( or Gmelin of Rome) is from a publication titled "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" by Dr Giulio Ferrario (1767-1847) and was published in the 1820s. Ferrario's work documented and compared clothes and costumes from around the world and across the ages, and it was one of the most important and thorough works on these subjects. Versions were published in Venice (1823-37) and by V. Batelli in Milan (1820-34); a "moderno" version was published in Milan in 1833-37.
