Description: Offered here is a lithograph titled “The Old Front Gate” by Buford E. Evans in very good to excellent condition. The print depicts an African American man and woman in conversation at the front gate of a house. In the lower right-hand corner beneath the image Lottman signed the print in pencil “B.E. Evans.” To the left the print is titled and under the left-hand corner, also in pencil, is “119/750.” The lithograph is laid down or glued to foam board on a heavy paper that measures 24 by 30 inches, the image itself measuring 17 ¾ by 24 inches. This print and the others in the edition were produced from an original oil painting of the same name. Accompanying the print is a Certificate of Authenticity certifying that the plates and related materials had been destroyed after the prints were created. Please review the accompanying photographs carefully as they are the most important part of the description. Buford Elonzo Evans was born in Golinda, Texas in 1931 and died in Houston in 2023. He studied art at the Universite de Paris a la Sorbonne and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the 1950s when stationed in Paris while in the Air Force. He was frequently commissioned as a portrait painter and his work was often shown in exhibitions and galleries. Evans credited his African American background as being an inspiration for his art.
