Wells journalistic work began on the Erie Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Buffalo Morning Review. While on the staff of the latter, he did some very creditable special work in connection with the Pan-American Exposition. As an eye-witness of the assassination of President William McKinley, his exclusive stories brought instant recognition in the newspaper field. His story of the tragedy was published in Colliers, Harpers and other well-known magazines. In 1902, Mr. Wells became associated with the Buffalo Evening News occupying the position of Managing Editor. His column "From Grave To Gay" in this publication brought Mr. Wells much fame as a verse writer and fun maker. He was generally designated as the logical successor of the Hoosier Poet. In 1926 Mr. Wells took over the managing editorship of the old Buffalo Courier, and when that paper was merged with The Buffalo Express he became managing editor of the new paper, remaining until his retirement in 1929. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Roswell P. Bagley and Mrs. Raymond D. Stevens, and one son, John D.
