Tight binding, solid spine, clean unmarked  text, previous owner’s signature to ffep, gilt top-edge several unopened pages. Illustrated fromtis, 8vo, 151 pages. John D. Wells journalistic work began on the Erie Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Buffalo Morning Review. While on the staff of the latter, he did some very creditable special work in connection with the Pan-American Exposition. As an eye-witness of the assassination of President William McKinley, his exclusive stories brought instant recognition in the newspaper field. His story of the tragedy was published in Colliers, Harpers and other well-known magazines. In 1902, Mr. Wells became associated with the Buffalo Evening News occupying the position of Managing Editor. His column "From Grave To Gay" in this publication brought Mr. Wells much fame as a verse writer and fun maker. He was generally designated as the logical successor of the Hoosier Poet. He was incredibly popular on the lecture platform. The American Press Association honored him by electing him as their president.Obituary - The New York Times - April 3, 1932WELLS.--John D. Wells, newspaper humorist and lecturer, died at the family residence in Buffalo, New York, last night, following a brief illness. At one time he was President of the American Press Humorists' Association. Born in North East, Pennsylvania, in 1878, the son of William Delaney and Mildred (Miller) Wells, he obtained his education in the public schools of that city. In 1926 Mr. Wells took over the managing editorship of the old Buffalo Courier, and when that paper was merged with The Buffalo Express he became managing editor of the new paper, remaining until his retirement in 1929. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Roswell P. Bagley and Mrs. Raymond D. Stevens, and one son, John D.
