This mid1950s session that John Hammond put together on the fly using the Count Basie (minus Basie and adding Sir Charles Thompson on piano) rhythm section when Brother John walked in either for an audition or demo. The session was simply a great live performance in the studio--the way great jazz still is. It was released as is. Brother John was part blues, part gospel, part folk and with perhaps a more citified voice--full and articulate-- similar to Josh White Sr. He apparently had a long and prosperous career recording and becoming involved with the Alvin Ailey dance troupe as a vocalist or composer. The music here is quite excellent.
