Provenance: John M[erle] Coulter (November 20, 1851 – December 23, 1928) by signature and date stamp of March 19, 1908 (while he was Professor and head of the department of Botany at the University of Chicago). Coulter was an American botanist and educator. In his career in education administration, Coulter is notable for serving as the president of Indiana University and Lake Forest College and the head of the Department of Botany at the University of Chicago Wikipedia. Nine months after the date on this book, Coulter and his wife, along with their children Grace and Merle, survived the sinking of the White Star liner Republic in which six were killed. Prof Frederick Orpen Bower FRSE FRS [1] (4 November 1855 – 11 April 1948) was an English botanist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1891.He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1909 and the Darwin Medal of the Royal Society in 1938.
