The original bonsai pot, Heian Izumiyama, is produced by a kiln that carries on this tradition. The kiln was founded in 1922 in the Sennyu-ji area of Higashiyama, Kyoto, where the pottery was produced by Heian Tofukuji and Wakuen. Today, the company is in its fourth generation, and is one of the largest potters of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics in Kyoto. Through a fortunate coincidence, KINBON and Toan decided to produce bonsai pots made of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki porcelain. The pots are made in the Mokuri style, which has a reputation in the small bonsai world for its modern design and ease of use. The glaze is an original “star crystal” glaze created by Zenaki Tsuchibuchi, the founder of Toan. The crystalline glaze has the property of forming crystals during the process of melting and cooling the glaze. The seven-colored star crystals floating in the jet-black glaze are reminiscent of “yohen tenmoku,” the highest grade of tea utensils. Depending on the angle of view, the piece appears black or deep green, and the variety of expressions is one of the charms of this piece. The crystals appear differently on each piece, and no two pieces have the same pattern.
