Portwood retired from a merchandising career with Sears Roebuck after 31 years. He's been painting watercolors for 15 years and has been a local resident for 11. For his subjects, Portwood selects Colonial Williamsburg scenes "off the beaten path." He modestly says he doesn't paint the major exhibition buildings because they have been done before, and better than he could do them. He also concentrates on "disappearing Americana," such as old bridges. After the sale, Portwood sends a note to people who buy his paintings. Some have written back and the artist and purchaser have become friends.
