Its post-and-beam framing, central-chimney plan, clapboarded exterior, and interior paneling are defining characteristics of the form. Although today surviving in fewer numbers than the five-bay arrangement, the three-bay symmetrical facade was also common in the period, especially for story-and-a-half houses. Its size and lack of architectural elaboration (other than the simple moldings and paneling typical of the period's vernacular architecture) are consistent with the house's historical associations with Joseph Blakeslee (1739-1804) and his son, John W. Blakeslee (1769-1825), both of whom were Connecticut farmers of modest means.
