Description: I LOVE visiting Planetariums when I travel around the country. I really enjoy wandering around and reading their displays to see how they reach out to interest and excite the public about the beauty and wonder of our Universe. Rarely do I encounter anything that makes me stop in my tracks. However, my first visit to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago can only be described as a life-changing experience for me. I turned a corner, entered a room, and stood face to face with a magnificent display on the life of BENJAMIN BANNEKER. WHO? I had never heard of him before, not in any of my studies and most definitely not in any history of Astronomy texts. I was completely blown away by this fascinating and IMPORTANT self-taught genius who happened to have been born with the wrong colored skin to warrant any real wide-spread attention or well-deserved RESPECT during the time when he was alive (1731-1806) or, unfortunately it seems, since. (He WAS finally recognized with a U.S. Postage Stamp in 1980.) HOW COULD HISTORY HAVE JUST LET HIM SLIP BETWEEN THE CRACKS? There was never an "official" portrait, so subsequent drawings and images can be fairly inconsistent as to what he really looked like. This became a serious issue when I tried to commission one of our shirt printers to create a Banneker T-shirt. Wanting to put his new 8-color printer to the test, he wanted to create a life-like portrait but found so many competing images that he was wary to inaccurately represent his likeness. Instead, we went back and forth on a few ideas that ultimately lead to the creation of this shirt design. We are very proud to have been part of this, even if, ultimately, it didn't include Banneker.
