Big Early Original Signed Ben A. Ortega Carving St Francis of Assisi 16"x 11.5"

Description: This is an Estate Fresh big old Religious carving from a local Estate home. Its a FANTASTIC Big Early Original Signed Master Carver Ben Ortega Carving of St Francis of Assisi a huge 16.5" x 11.5" fingertips across. It comes in very nice condition as described above with no issues. Fantastic original as found carving, could use a little dusting and a wipe down of Feed n Wax to add a nice finish to him. One can occasionally find an Ben Ortega carving out there, but not many 16+" tall. Use my photos as your guide to condition, its a handsome beauty! From AskArt: Ben Ortega Born in 1923 in Tesuque, New Mexico. Ortega lived there all his life, except for the three years he spent serving with the 240th Combat Engineers in World War II. Upon returning home, he learned cabinet making and machine shop in Santa Fe for two years, and then planned to go to California with some classmates, to find work. Around this time he began carving in wood, as he had done from childhood, small religious figures, a Saint Francis, and a Madonna. Both sold immediately at a benefit sale for the Santa Fe Opera, and an artist was born. Commissions followed, and Ortega is now known for a signature carving style which emphasizes the natural grain of the wood in graceful lines and delicate features, reflecting the strong spirituality of this master carver. His work has brought him several Grand Prix awards at Santa Fe's annual Spanish Market, and is recognized around the world, with his sculptures in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute, the U.S. Embassy in Paris, and in private homes, churches and chapels around the world. Ben Ortega died in 1998, but his legacy of woodcarving lives on in his family, now in the fourth generation.
