Description: This is a real deal 1971 Big Block Chevrolet engine block. The casting number is 3963512. The casting date is L 5 70 which decodes as December 5th, 1970. The 3963512 block was used exclusively for 1969 427 engines and 70-71 454 engines. . This is a very hard to find late 1970 block for early in the 1971 model year.The pad on this block is stamped T0109CPD 11C122110 as shown. The T0109CPD shows that this engine was assembled at the Tonowanda engine plant on January 9th, 1971 as a LS5 454/365HP engine for a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle, Monte Carlo, and fullsize cars. The 11C122110 is the partial VIN of the car the block was originally installed in. This casting number was also used on many other applications from 1969-1971. Many times, the numbers on the front pad are removed during the rebuild process which makes the block restoration correct for many other applications. Please confirm your specific application. This block is in good condition as shown. There are no breaks or repairs to this block. The bore size is is still standard broe at 4.25 inches and the bores are very clean with little ridge at the tops of the cylinders as shown. There are areas of light isolated pitting and the block should clean up with a minimal bore. There are no sleeves in any cylinders. All threads are in good condition with a no helicoils or thread inserts. The block has been checked for cracks and none were found. This block is guaranteed to be a good core for rebuilding. This is a great block to build for performance or restoration. Since this block started life as an LS5 engine, it has 2 bolt main caps. That said, Big Block Chevy blocks are pretty straight forward to convert to 4 bolt since the main caps use the same size saddle whether they are 2 or 4 bolt. If you are interested in 4 bolt main caps to use on this block, I have a set available. This is simply a nice unmolested block that is ready to build for a correct resto or performance build.
