Description: Oil on board signed lower right by Beni Kosh, 1968, abstract painting in tones of blue. Title is a little hard to make out, but appears to be "Donnez-moi un verre s.v.p. [s'il vous plait] a la Mildred", then the signature 'Beni Kosh 68', then below it looks like 'Suit aves l'homme ...? I cannot tell the last word. This is painted on a rough textured type of board, in a blue glossy frame. The framed dimensions are 11 1/4 x 13 5/8", image dimensions 10 x 12 1/4". Charles Elmer Harris was born in 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio. In the 1960s, he legally changed his name to Beni E. Kosh or Son Of Ethiopia. He was a student of Cleveland artist Paul Travis at the Cleveland Institute of Art and later connected to the Sho Nuff Art Group, a group of African-American artists, and the Karamu House artist group.Koshs work was stylistically diverse. He experimented with Cubism, portraiture, cityscapes, and abstractions during his career, and his paintings also display an interest in African sculpture and modern art.Kosh scarcely ever exhibited or sold his work. It was not until the end of his life that his works were rediscovered and amassed recognition. Koshs work is noted in the catalog Yet Still, We Rise: African American Art in Cleveland 1920 1970 and included in exhibitions at the Cleveland State University and the Butler Institute of American Art. The artist died in 1993.
