The event took place 20 years after Leopold II’s accession to Belgium’s throne, and the same year Congo’s independent state was created, the fair was the first to have had a Congolese village, an element that was also present at the 18975 Brussels International Exhibition. It was also the venue for the first 24-hour watch made by Jean Joseph Lacoppe, a Walloon born in 1840 in Stavelot and later settled in Liège.
